Although money has been invested in the major cities since the recent cessation of over twenty nine years of war, Afghanistan’s rural areas remain in severe poverty. According to figures from the United Nation Development Programme (UNDP) based in Kabul, people in rural areas are suffering from shortage of clean water.

Afghanistan remains one of the world’s poorest countries.

AACO has been approached by residents to develop this project plan to establish Wells in all districts which would serve a community of around 7 million people in the deprived and drought areas, positively impacting on their health, education, climate, transportation and local markets.

The project will aim to work with local charities such as the Swedish Committee for Afghanistan, USAID, EU Commission, UNDP, Provincial Reconstruction Programme (PRT) and engage the local district authority to support the construction of the WELLS.

In a recent visit to Afghanistan, AACO’s Director, Dr. Nooralhaq Nasimi secured the agreement and support of key local districts authority, officials and residents for the construction of the new WELLS.

National Solidarity Programme in Afghanistan will be a facilitating partner which is now active in all 34 provinces of Afghanistan. We have received full support of the beneficiaries during the visit of the Director of AACO in Afghanistan in July 2008.

The community in the districts expressed their full participation and contribution in the process to establish this vital project. The project will provide employment opportunity for unskilled labours during digging well construction.

One of the important activities in connection to water wells is to conduct hygiene education about water handling, storage and water borne diseases.

We will work together with the Afghanistan Ministry of Rural Rehabilitation and Development. Baseline survey, location of the projects and future maintenance of the wells has been coordinated with Ministry of Rural Rehabilitation and Development through WSG (Water and Sanitation Group) for Afghanistan.

The projects will be monitored and implemented by Afghanistan and Asian Community organisation (AACO) and Afghanistan authorities. The estimate of the costs constructing of each WELL is approximately $3000, £1500. This includes: construction, materials, and management, administration and labour costs.

We need your help and assistance in this important time for Afghanistan, please think about this and support our ongoing projects to save the lives of many women, children and men who are suffering from diseases and help the lives of people who are dying everyday.

Thank you for your assistance in this important matter.
