Somerset House on the Strand was once the
centre for records of Birth Marriages and Deaths, no longer
though. Just the dead hand of the Inland Revenue.
The restoration has made all the difference, the stone has been cleaned and
so have the statues. Polished to a fine glaze with lanolin, some people put it
on their hair and others in the bread.
Somerset House - Britania
This is one great statue, sparkling in the sun, Britania in her glory
along with lion and boat, at her feet Neptune (I think), the walk from the
Embankment Side across the Quad to the Strand Gate stepping around the fountains
a bit of a test.
Somerset House - Sphinx
High up you can see the two Sphinx, these I belive were
liberated from Crystal Palace following the closure of the
Great Exhibition
